Jacob Hendricus Maris (25 August 1837 – 7 August 1899) was a Dutch painter who, with his brothers Willem and Matthijs, belonged to the so-called Haager Painting School, the most important and influential Dutch landscape painters of the last quarter of the 19th century. His most famous works are the portrait series of the Royal House of Orange, on which he worked with his brother Matthijs Maris. In his works he captures the beauty of the Dutch landscape and conveys an atmosphere of peace and serenity to the viewer.
