Jacques-Louis David (1748 – 1825) was an influential French neoclassical-style painter, considered the pre-eminent painter of his time. In the 1780s his intellectual style of history painting marked a shift in taste away from Rococo frivolity towards classical austerity, a heightened sentiment that harmonized with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime.
