Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780 – 1867) was a French neoclassical painter. Although he considered himself a history painter in the tradition of Nicolas Poussin and Jacques-Louis David, towards the end of his life it was Ingres' painted and drawn portraits that have been recognized as his greatest legacy. His expressive distortions of form and space made him an important pioneer of modern art, influencing Picasso, Matisse and other modernists.
