Wolfgang Kleinschmidt

(January 17, 1933 - May 27, 2018) was an outstanding German abstract artist and art teacher. He gained notoriety through his environmental project "Cemetery" at documenta 6 (1969) and floor objects at documenta 7. In addition to his teaching work in Hagen, he devoted himself to various artistic topics such as "landscapes" and "graphic notations". Kleinschmidt received the "Premio Italia 1980" for his painterly/graphic reworking of "le sacre du prontemps". His diverse works, including paintings, graphics, objects, tableaux, collages and calligraphic abstractions, are represented in institutions such as the Hessian Ministry of Culture and the Bundestag building in Bonn. His artistic career began in 1961 and he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and the Staatliche Werkkunstschule in Kassel, among others. Kleinschmidt received several prizes, including the Premio D'Italis (1980) and the Nikolaus Lenau Prize (1985). In addition to his artistic work, he was also involved in poetry and produced short films.
